Why Indian Students Choose Russia: Real Reasons

The biggest reason Indian students look at Russia is not glamour. It is the cost difference. A six-year medical degree in Russia can come to ₹22 – 35 lakh, while an Indian private college for the same degree is ₹60 lakh – ₹1 crore. That gap is why Russia stays on the shortlist for families who want a government university option without paying private-college prices.

There is another reason it comes up so often: most NMC-approved universities teach MBBS in English, with Russian taught alongside for clinical work and patient interaction. That makes the academic path easier to start than many students expect. But do not confuse easy entry with an easy licence to practise later. For Indian students, the real finish line is FMGE or NExT.

If you want the broader breakdown of costs, visa steps and university options, see our Russia country guide.

The number you should plan around is the full six-year cost, not just the first-year tuition. Verified figures show tuition at ₹2.5 – 5 lakh per year, hostel and food at ₹1 – 1.5 lakh per year, and an all-in six-year total of ₹22 – 35 lakh. That total already includes hostel in the country guide numbers.

There are still extra one-off costs that families often forget. A student visa is ₹8,000 – ₹15,000. Medical insurance is ₹10,000 – ₹15,000 per year. Airfare is ₹35,000 – ₹60,000. And if you budget properly, FMGE / NExT coaching is another ₹50,000 – ₹1.5 lakh, because that exam decides whether the degree works in India.

Ask for the fee structure in writing on university letterhead, for all six years. Agent quotes that bundle “everything” and then change in year two are the most common complaint from this route.

Russia does not give Indian students a free pass on eligibility. You need 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, at least 50% in PCB or 40% for reserved categories, minimum age 17, and a valid NEET UG qualification. For Indian students taking a medical degree abroad, NEET UG is compulsory. No NEET, no admission.

That is why this route is not for students trying to avoid the medical entrance system entirely. It is for students who have qualified NEET but do not want to pay private-college prices in India. IELTS and TOEFL are not required for most universities, so language testing is not the main obstacle here. NEET is.

Admission is usually based on NEET plus Class 12 marks. There is no separate competitive entrance exam for most NMC-approved Russian universities, which is one reason the process feels simpler than many alternatives.

The visa is called the Russian Student Visa. The fee is ₹8,000 – ₹15,000, and processing time is 3 to 6 weeks after the official invitation letter. Proof of tuition payment and the university's invitation letter are required, and the requirements are lighter than Western destinations.

The part students get wrong is not the visa form. It is the university check. Verify the university yourself on the NMC website before you pay anyone anything. If the university is not on the NMC-approved list, you cannot sit FMGE, which means the degree does not work in India. That single check is more important than any brochure.

The usual timeline runs like this: qualify NEET UG in the year you apply, verify the university on the NMC list before anything else, get the admission letter in June – July, receive the Ministry of Education invitation in 4 – 6 weeks, complete medical tests and the visa application in July – August, then travel and register within 7 days of arrival.

• Qualify NEET UG
• Verify the university on the NMC list
• Get the admission letter and written six-year fee structure
• Receive the Ministry of Education invitation
• Complete medical tests and visa application
• Travel and register at the university’s international office

Work is permitted with authorisation, but medical programmes leave little time. You should not plan your budget around part-time work. That is the honest answer. If you need earnings to make the course affordable, Russia is not a safe bet for you.

What does help is that living costs are still manageable compared with many other overseas options. In Moscow and St Petersburg, living cost is ₹15,000 – ₹25,000 per month. In regional cities such as Kazan, Kemerovo and Tomsk, it is ₹10,000 – ₹15,000 per month. That difference matters if your family is trying to keep the total under control.

This is also why some students choose regional cities over the biggest names. The degree route is similar, but the monthly pressure can be lower.

Indian students most often look at MBBS / MD General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing. For medicine, a few names come up repeatedly because they are NMC-approved and already have Indian student communities.

• Siberian State Medical University, Tomsk — NMC-approved; long-established Indian cohort
• Kazan Federal University, Kazan — NMC-approved; English-medium MBBS
• Kemerovo State Medical University, Kemerovo — NMC-approved
• Bashkir State Medical University, Ufa — NMC-approved
• Crimea Federal University, Simferopol — verify current NMC status before applying

The reason these campuses matter is not marketing. It is support. Indian messes, cultural associations and FMGE coaching exist on many of these campuses because the pipeline has run for decades. That can make the first year easier, especially if you are leaving home for the first time.

Still, check the NMC status yourself before paying. Never rely on an agent’s assurance.

Russia is not a migration route in the way some parents imagine. After the six-year MD, you return to India and sit FMGE, which is being replaced by NExT. Passing that exam grants registration with the NMC or a State Medical Council and lets you practise in India. Treat exam preparation as part of the course from year one, not something you start at the end.

Some graduates also pursue USMLE or PLAB afterwards. A Russian MD is accepted for both, but each has its own requirements. That is a separate path, not an automatic outcome.

If your only goal is “study abroad and settle overseas,” Russia is usually not the cleanest match. If your goal is to get a medical degree at a lower cost and return to India, it is much more relevant.

If Russia is on your list, start with two checks: your NEET status and the university’s NMC listing. Then get the full six-year fee structure in writing and budget for FMGE or NExT from the beginning, not after graduation.

Do I need NEET to study MBBS in Russia?

Yes. A valid NEET UG qualification is compulsory for Indian students taking a medical degree abroad. Without it, you cannot sit FMGE later, and the degree cannot be used to practise in India.

Is the total cost really ₹22 – 35 lakh?

Yes, at government universities, including hostel and living. Ask for the full six-year fee structure in writing on university letterhead because mid-course fee increases are a common complaint.

Can I work part-time while studying in Russia?

Work is permitted with authorisation, but medical programmes leave little time. Do not plan your finances around it.

What is FMGE and is NExT replacing it?

FMGE is the screening test foreign medical graduates must pass to practise in India. NExT is its planned replacement. Either way, you must clear an exam after you return.

How do I know a Russian university is genuinely NMC-approved?

Check the NMC list yourself on the official website before paying anyone anything. Do not rely on an agent’s brochure or the university’s own claim.

Who should not choose Russia?

Students who need part-time work to fund their degree, students who have not qualified NEET, and students who want a direct route to settlement abroad should look elsewhere.
