UK Visa Policy 2027: New Graduate Visa Rules for International Students

Starting 1 January 2027, the UK Graduate Visa duration will be reduced for most international students completing bachelor's or master's degrees.

PhD graduates will still get a 3-year Graduate Visa, but bachelor's and master's graduates will have a shorter post-study work period.

The UK Government says the Graduate Route is meant to help international graduates move into graduate-level jobs quickly.

This means you should plan your career strategy carefully before choosing your course and university.

Steps to prepare:

• Choose the right course that builds relevant skills
• Gain experience through internships or projects
• Prepare a UK-style CV
• Attend career events and network with employers
• Apply for jobs early, even before graduation

If you plan to do a master's in the UK starting 2027 or later, your post-study work visa will be 18 months instead of 2 years.

This shorter time means you should start job hunting and preparing for employment before you graduate.

Useful tips include:

• Develop in-demand technical skills
• Complete internships or relevant projects
• Network actively with potential employers
• Attend university career fairs
• Apply for graduate roles early

Good news if you are doing a PhD or other doctoral qualification.

The 3-year Graduate Visa remains unchanged for doctoral graduates even after 2027.

This means you will still have a longer post-study work period to find employment or switch to other visa routes.

The Graduate Visa itself cannot be extended beyond its duration.

However, you may be able to switch to other visa routes like the Skilled Worker visa if you meet the requirements.

Use your post-study period to build your career and explore long-term visa options.
