Studying in India: Common Questions, Plain Answers

Most families start by asking which college is “best”. That is the wrong first question. The more useful question is: which exam actually opens the door for your course?

In Delhi NCR, CUET is the main gateway for DU, JNU, Jamia and most other central universities. For engineering at IIT Delhi, you need JEE Main / Advanced. For medicine at AIIMS Delhi, you need NEET UG. That means the same state can ask for very different entrance routes depending on the course.

This is why Delhi NCR is such a useful place to understand the system. It has flagship institutes like IIT Delhi, DU and JNU, and it also shows the trade-off clearly: the same state can give you some of the widest course choice in India, but it can also be expensive to live in if you do not get a hostel seat.

If you want the full Delhi NCR breakdown, including fees, hostels and course options, you can check our state guide at /study-in-india/states/delhi-ncr.

Fees alone do not tell you the full cost. Hostel and daily living can change the decision completely.

In Delhi NCR, tuition at DU or a central university is ₹0.1L – ₹0.4L / yr. IIT Delhi tuition is ₹2L – ₹2.5L / yr. A private university in Noida or Gurugram can charge ₹1.5L – ₹6L / yr. On top of that, DU hostel plus mess costs ₹0.6L – ₹1.2L / yr, while a private-college hostel usually costs ₹1L – ₹2.5L / yr.

That matters because Delhi is one of India’s more expensive cities to live in outside campus, so if you do not get a hostel seat you must factor in local transport and rent. A cheap tuition number can still become a heavy total bill.

If your budget is tight, compare the total cost of a government seat in another state with a private seat at home. Often the answer depends less on the college name and more on whether you get a hostel and how far you must travel every day.

The biggest source of confusion is that different states use different admission systems. Some rely on a CET, some on marks-based counselling, and some on a national exam like JEE, NEET or CUET.

• Delhi NCR: CUET for DU, JNU, Jamia and most central universities; JEE Main / Advanced for IIT Delhi; NEET UG for AIIMS Delhi.
• Maharashtra: MHT-CET is the primary route into state engineering, pharmacy and agriculture colleges; JEE Main / Advanced is for IIT Bombay and other centrally-funded institutes.
• Tamil Nadu: TNEA is marks-based for most engineering seats, so there is no separate written entrance exam for most of them; IIT Madras still needs JEE.
• Karnataka: KCET and COMEDK cover most engineering seats between them.
• Telangana: TS EAMCET is the primary route into state engineering, pharmacy and agriculture colleges.
• West Bengal: WBJEE is the state exam for engineering, pharmacy and architecture colleges.
• Gujarat: GUJCET is the state exam for engineering, pharmacy and architecture colleges.
• Kerala: KEAM covers engineering, pharmacy and architecture.
• Uttar Pradesh: JEE and UPTAC are the main routes for engineering, with UPTAC counselling used for AKTU-affiliated colleges.
• Rajasthan: JEE, NEET and BITSAT all matter, depending on the institution.

Two states show the contrast especially well. In Tamil Nadu, most engineering seats are admitted through TNEA primarily on Class 12 marks. In Delhi NCR, one CUET attempt can open most central universities. If you are choosing where to apply, that difference changes how much exam coaching matters.

A government seat is usually cheaper. A private seat is usually easier to enter for the same course. But the right choice depends on the subject and the institution, not the label alone.

In Delhi NCR, DU and central universities offer among the lowest tuition of any well-known Indian university system at ₹0.1L – ₹0.4L / yr. IIT Delhi charges ₹2L – ₹2.5L / yr. A private university in Noida or Gurugram may charge ₹1.5L – ₹6L / yr. So if you can reach a strong government option, the savings can be large.

But private universities are not always a bad choice. The Delhi NCR guide notes that they often offer more industry-linked, professional programmes at a higher fee. That can make sense if your goal is a course with a clearer industry pipeline, especially if the government seat available to you is in a less suitable branch.

The same pattern appears elsewhere. In Gujarat, a state government seat can cost ₹0.4L – ₹1.2L / yr, while a private engineering or pharmacy college may cost ₹1L – ₹2.5L / yr. In Kerala, government/KEAM-quota tuition is ₹0.1L – ₹0.5L / yr, while private/self-financing colleges charge ₹1L – ₹2.5L / yr. In West Bengal, government/aided colleges are among the lowest in the country at ₹0.1L – ₹0.4L / yr.

So the practical question is not “government or private?” It is “which exact branch, college and city fit my budget and my job plan?”

If you are comparing states, do not only look at fees. Look at whether the state has a credible flagship institute, a workable entrance system, and a job market that helps the degree after you graduate.

If your family wants to stay within one state, these are not the only options, but they are some of the clearest systems to compare because the admission route and the cost structure are easy to understand.

Do not choose a degree only by the name of the college. Choose it by the likely job path after graduation.

In Delhi NCR, the top recruiters include large IT and consulting firms, Central government departments and PSUs, media houses, and startups headquartered in Gurugram and Noida. The industries listed in the guide are IT & consulting, government & public policy, media & publishing, finance and startups. That makes Delhi NCR a strong place for students who want access to public-policy work, media or a broad corporate market.

In Maharashtra, the recruiter pool includes major IT services firms, banking and financial-services companies headquartered in Mumbai, and automotive and manufacturing companies around Pune. In Karnataka, Bengaluru’s technology density gives students access to major IT and software companies, aerospace and defence PSUs, and a dense startup ecosystem. In Tamil Nadu, automotive and auto-component manufacturers around Chennai remain important, alongside IT services and healthcare.

For some states, the local industry is the reason to study there. Telangana has a real pharma-and-IT base in Hyderabad. Gujarat has a genuine local pharma and chemical-industry base. Kerala’s graduates often move into healthcare, engineering and Gulf employment. Punjab has a strong agricultural-sciences tradition through Punjab Agricultural University. Rajasthan’s BITS Pilani is nationally respected and can place into a similar pool of national and multinational employers as the IITs.

The useful question for parents is simple: does the state have the kind of employers that match the degree your child is taking? If not, a cheaper seat may still be the wrong seat.

Many families focus on admission and ignore the small rules that later decide whether the plan works.

In Delhi NCR, DU merit/means scholarships are available for meritorious students from low-income families, applied for through the college. The Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships is a renewable annual scholarship for meritorious students from economically weaker sections. In Maharashtra, state government scholarships include fee reimbursement for reserved categories and economically backward classes. Similar fee-reimbursement schemes exist in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Kerala and Uttarakhand.

Language is also simpler than many families fear. Delhi NCR uses Hindi and English. Maharashtra uses Marathi and English. Karnataka uses Kannada and English. Tamil Nadu uses Tamil and English. Telangana uses Telugu and English. Most college-level instruction across these states is in English, and several guides state clearly that local language is not required for admission or coursework at most institutions.

Eligibility is still course-specific. For example, most central university undergraduate courses require a Class 12 pass with subject-specific minimums, while engineering in states like Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telangana usually expects PCM. Medical admission across states still runs through NEET UG. So before you pay for coaching or counselling, check the exact subject combination and the exact exam for the course you want.

Start with the exam, then compare the total cost, not just tuition. Shortlist two or three states that match your course, budget and location preference, then check the exact college and counselling route for each one. If you are stuck between a government seat far from home and a private seat nearby, compare hostel cost, travel and the likely job path before deciding.
