Scholarships in United States for Indian Students: Guide

For a master's applicant, the most important US funding may not be a scholarship with a national application form. Teaching and research assistantships can provide a tuition waiver plus a ₹13L – ₹26L stipend ($15,000–$30,000 stipend). They are awarded by individual departments, not by the central admissions office.

That distinction changes how you should apply. Submit your admission application, but also investigate the department's funded teaching and research work. Email professors whose work you have genuinely read. Explain the relevant skills you could bring to their lab or course. This is a real funding strategy, not a shortcut to admission.

Assistantships are competitive, so you cannot build a financial plan that assumes you will receive one. But they change the budget more than any other single factor. A realistic all-in first-year budget for a public-university master's is ₹35L – ₹48L ($40,000–$55,000). Apply for assistantships in the same breath as you apply for admission.

Timing matters too. Fall runs from August – September, with applications generally due by December – January. It is the main intake, and almost all funding is here. Spring begins in January, with applications generally due by August – September, but has fewer courses and much less funding. If funding is essential, Fall should usually drive your plan.

The following options explicitly include Indian citizens or international applicants. They are not interchangeable. Some reward professional leadership, some require a particular admission profile, and others are controlled by a university department.

Fulbright-Nehru is not designed for a student applying directly from college without the required work record. Inlaks is not a general backup for every admit: it requires top-tier admission and has an age condition. Assistantships may be the more relevant route for many master's and PhD applicants, while university merit awards can reduce tuition without covering the full cost.

Scholarship deadlines are not included here because they must be checked on the current provider page. For Fulbright-Nehru, use USIEF. Check the Inlaks Foundation, department and university pages directly for their current application instructions.

A scholarship amount means little until you compare it with the correct course and city. Undergraduate tuition is ₹22L – ₹53L / year ($25,000 – $60,000 / year). A public-university master's costs ₹18L – ₹35L / year ($20,000 – $40,000 / year), while a private-university master's costs ₹31L – ₹62L / year ($35,000 – $70,000 / year).

Community college followed by transfer is the cheapest legitimate route to a US degree. Tuition is ₹7L – ₹13L / year ($8,000 – $15,000 / year) for the 2-year community-college stage. It can suit an undergraduate applicant with a limited budget, but you must examine the transfer route rather than treating the initial tuition as the price of the entire degree.

A partial merit award at an expensive private university can still leave you paying more than you would at a public university without the same award. Compare the net amount you must pay, including living costs and health insurance. Our United States country guide has the broader cost and study-route breakdown.

Most US master's programmes expect 16 years of education. Many universities accept a 3-year Indian bachelor's degree, but not all. Some ask for a WES evaluation, while others insist on 16 years of education. Do not apply hoping that a firm requirement will be waived. Build your list around universities that accept your degree.

US universities read GPA on a 4.0 scale. In broad terms, 70%+ in an Indian degree is competitive. A result of 60% narrows your list rather than ending it. The published academic and funding requirements should shape your choices before brand recognition does.

For examples of different profiles, Arizona State University has a very large intake and an accessible admission bar. The University of Texas at Dallas is popular for MS in CS and Business Analytics. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has a large Indian cohort and a strong assistantship culture. These descriptions do not guarantee either admission or funding; each programme and department makes its own decision.

Common choices among Indian students include MS Computer Science, MS Data Science, MS Business Analytics, MS Electrical Engineering, MBA, MS Mechanical Engineering and MS Information Systems. If post-study work matters, check whether the exact programme has a STEM CIP code before accepting. Programmes with the same name at the same university can have different codes.

Start 12 months before your intake. The application itself may not be the slowest part. Visa interview slots in India can be booked out for months.

• Fall: August – September, apply by December – January. This is the main intake and has almost all funding.
• Spring: January, apply by August – September. It is smaller, with fewer courses and much less funding.
• Summer: May, apply by January. It is rare and mostly available for specific programmes.

Do not wait for an admission decision before researching departmental funding. Check whether an assistantship has a separate process, whether merit consideration is automatic, and whether the scholarship provider requires an admission offer. The current university or scholarship page is the right source for any deadline not stated here.

For Fall, universities commonly issue Form I-20 during March – May once they have your financial documents. Check every name and date on the form. An error means the university must reissue it, which can delay the visa stage.

On an F-1 Student Visa, you may work 20 hours per week on campus during term and full-time in vacations. Off-campus work requires CPT or OPT authorisation. Working without authorisation ends your status.

These rules do not tell you how much you will earn. No verified campus pay figure is available here, so do not assume a job will cover tuition or living costs. Treat permitted work as possible support, not as proof that an unaffordable offer has become affordable.

After study, Optional Practical Training gives you 12 months of work rights. A STEM-designated degree can add a 24-month extension, creating 36 months in total. Check the STEM CIP code on your offer letter before accepting it.

OPT is applied for through your university's international office and USCIS, not through an employer. STEM OPT requires an E-Verify employer and a formal training plan. The usual longer-term route is OPT followed by H-1B sponsorship, which is a lottery, and then employer-sponsored permanent residence. The Indian employment-based green-card queue is very long. US study should therefore be treated as a career decision, not as a reliable settlement plan.

Your F-1 visa file must show enough funds for the first year's tuition and living costs stated on the I-20. Accepted evidence includes bank statements, education-loan sanction letters and sponsor affidavits. A scholarship or assistantship should be reflected accurately in the financial picture; it does not remove the need to document any remaining amount.

Pay the ₹31,000 SEVIS I-901 fee online at FMJfee.com at least 3 days before the interview, and print the receipt. Complete Form DS-160 and pay the ₹16,000 MRV fee. Errors in the photograph or answers can cause administrative processing.

You then book two appointments: biometrics at a VAC and the consular interview. Slots in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad open in waves. Interview waits can range from weeks to several months, so book as soon as you receive your I-20. At the interview, be ready to explain in your own words why you chose the course and university, and how you will pay for it. You should be able to answer both in under a minute.

Budget another ₹22,000 ($250) for the Visa Integrity Fee once collection begins. It was signed into law in July 2025, and collection at visa issuance is expected during 2026.

From 15 September 2026, DHS replaces open-ended duration-of-status admission with a fixed period matching your I-20, capped at four years plus a 30-day departure window. If your programme goes beyond four years, you must file an extension of stay with USCIS, including biometrics. You may enter the US up to 30 days before the programme start date, but not earlier. Verify current rules through Study in the States and the Department of State student visa page.

Choose Fall, shortlist programmes that accept your Indian qualification, and compare the net cost after funding rather than the headline scholarship. Apply for departmental assistantships alongside admission, then verify every scholarship deadline and visa charge on the official provider page.

Can an Indian student get a fully funded scholarship in the US?

Yes. Fulbright-Nehru Master's Fellowships provide full funding covering tuition, living and airfare for eligible Indian citizens with 3+ years' work experience and a strong leadership record. Teaching and research assistantships can provide a tuition waiver plus a ₹13L – ₹26L stipend ($15,000–$30,000 stipend), but they are competitive.

Is a 3-year Indian bachelor's degree accepted for a US master's?

Many universities accept it, but not all. Some require a WES evaluation, while others require 16 years of education. Apply to programmes that explicitly accept your qualification rather than asking for an exception later.

Do I still need the GRE for US scholarship applications?

Often not. Many programmes have waived it since 2021. Check the programme page before booking the test; where it is optional, a strong submitted score can still help.

Can I pay my costs by working off campus?

No, not without authorisation. You may work 20 hours per week on campus during term and full-time in vacations. Off-campus work requires CPT or OPT authorisation, and unauthorised work ends your status.

Which US intake is best for scholarships and assistantships?

Fall. It runs from August – September, with applications generally due by December – January. Almost all funding is available in this intake. Spring has much less funding.

What is the $250 Visa Integrity Fee?

It is a ₹22,000 ($250) charge created by law in July 2025, payable on top of the ₹16,000 MRV fee when the visa is issued. Collection had not started as of mid-2026 but is expected during the year, so include it in your budget.
