New Zealand admission requirements: grades, tests and intakes

The biggest mistake is to treat every Level 7 qualification as the same. It is not. A Level 7 bachelor's degree or higher earns three years of post-study work rights, but a Level 7 graduate diploma earns one. Confirm the level on the offer letter before you pay a deposit. That single line can change your future work options.

If you are an Indian student with a 3-year degree, New Zealand can still work for you, but only if the university accepts it for the programme you want. For master's entry, the listed academic requirement is 60%+ in a bachelor's degree, and some programmes require a 4-year degree or relevant work experience. If your degree is shorter, check the exact programme rules before you assume you qualify. If you want the full country-wise picture of costs, visas and universities, start with our New Zealand country guide.

This is not the best destination if you want a very large job market. New Zealand is small in absolute terms. It suits students who want clear rules, smaller cohorts and a straightforward study-to-work path, especially in engineering, IT, healthcare, construction and agriculture.

Admission starts with your previous qualification. For bachelor's entry, the listed academic requirement is Class 12 with 65%+. For master's entry, you need 60%+ in a bachelor's degree. Some programmes go further and ask for a 4-year degree or relevant work experience.

That means your eligibility depends on both the level of study and the subject. A student applying for a master's in a technical field may clear the percentage rule but still miss the programme requirement if the degree length or background does not match. Do not guess from one university's brochure. Check the programme page and the qualification level before you apply.

If you are aiming for a diploma route, the cost picture is different. Polytechnic diploma tuition is ₹9.5L – ₹13L / year (NZD $18,000 – $25,000 / year). That can be useful if you want a shorter, lower-cost entry point, but it is not the same as a bachelor's route, so do not expect the same post-study outcome unless the qualification level matches the rule above.

Most students will use IELTS, PTE or TOEFL. The listed English requirement for IELTS Academic is 6.0 – 6.5 overall, with 6.5 with no band below 6.0 for postgraduate. For PTE Academic, the required range is 50 – 58. For TOEFL iBT, it is 60 – 90.

For a master's application, do not focus only on the overall score. The postgraduate IELTS condition includes a band floor: 6.5 with no band below 6.0. That is where many otherwise eligible applicants get stuck.

If your scores are short, do not build your plan around a later exception. Different programmes may ask for different minimums, and the university can be stricter than the broad country guide. Confirm the score on the programme page before booking your intake.

New Zealand has two main intakes: February and July. The February intake is the main intake. The listed application window is October – November. For the July intake, apply by April – May.

The deadline that really binds is not the visa date. It is the point when your chosen programme closes its admissions round and when your university can issue the Offer of Place. You need that offer before you can move to the visa stage. So if you are targeting February, you should be preparing much earlier than October in practice: shortlist courses, check entry rules and collect documents before the intake window opens.

Some readers lose an entire cycle because they focus on the visa page first. That is backwards. Admission comes first, then the visa. The offer letter is the document that unlocks the rest.

The student visa is the Fee Paying Student Visa. The listed fee is Approximately ₹45,000 (Approximately NZD $850). The processing time is 4 to 8 weeks. Visa issuance is electronic and linked to your passport.

For proof of funds, you need ₹11L per year, or ₹88,000 per month for shorter courses, plus tuition and return airfare. The visa also requires insurance covering the full period of study, and this is checked at visa stage, not on arrival. The listed medical and X-ray cost is ₹6,000 – ₹10,000. For Indian applicants, a chest X-ray is standard, and the police clearance certificate comes from the passport office.

New Zealand also checks that your offer comes from an institution approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. If you do not have the Offer of Place, funded tuition, insurance and medical documents ready, your visa file is not ready yet.

The broad yearly cost range for study in New Zealand is ₹12L – ₹19L (NZD $22,000 – $35,000) for tuition, plus living costs. For a master's, the total first-year outlay is typically ₹24L – ₹32L including living costs. That number matters because it tells you whether the plan is realistic before you start collecting documents.

Living costs vary by city. In Auckland, the listed range is ₹85,000 – ₹1.2L / month. In Wellington and Christchurch, it is ₹69,000 – ₹95,000 / month. In smaller centres such as Dunedin and Palmerston North, it is ₹58,000 – ₹80,000 / month. If your budget is tight, smaller centres are the better fit. Auckland is the most expensive of the listed options.

Insurance is compulsory, so do not leave it out of your budget. Students often plan for tuition and food, then forget visa fee, medicals, insurance and travel costs. That is how the number becomes too small on paper and too large in real life.

You can work up to 25 hours per week during term and full-time during scheduled holidays. That is a real help, but it does not erase your budget. The work right is for part-time support, not for funding the whole degree.

The change from 20 to 25 hours in November 2025 matters. It improves the part-time maths, but only if your course load and local job market cooperate. Do not assume the extra five hours will cover tuition. Use it to reduce pressure on living costs, not to replace them.

After study, the Post Study Work Visa gives 1 to 3 years depending on the qualification level, and a bachelor's degree gives 3 years. It is an open work visa with any employer, and the cost is from NZD $1,670. If you want the route into longer-term stay, the Skilled Migrant Category uses a six-point system based on qualifications, income or occupational registration, and New Zealand work experience during the post-study visa is what usually gets applicants over the line.

Scholarships exist, but you should not build your plan around them. The New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA) offer ₹2.6L – ₹5.3L (NZD $5,000 – $10,000) for Indian students at participating universities. Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships are full funding for development-focused postgraduate study. University international scholarships can be ₹2.6L – ₹11L (NZD $5,000 – $20,000) and are merit-based.

Indian students most often choose Master of Information Technology, Master of Engineering, Master of Business, Master of Applied Finance, Master of Nursing and Master of Agribusiness. These fit the labour market better than generic options, especially if you care about post-study work.

• University of Auckland — Auckland
• University of Otago — Dunedin
• Victoria University of Wellington — Wellington
• University of Canterbury — Christchurch
• Massey University — Palmerston North

If you need a broad comparison of institutions, affordability and visa basics, use the country guide once, then go straight to the programme page. That is the fastest way to tell whether your grades, English score and degree length actually fit.

First, check whether your degree level matches the programme you want, because that decides both admission and post-study work rights. Then line up your English score, target intake and proof of funds before you ask for the Offer of Place. If your degree is 3 years, verify the exact programme page before paying anything.

Do I really get three years to work after a bachelor's?

Yes, if your qualification is a Level 7 bachelor's degree or higher. A Level 7 graduate diploma gets one year. Check the level on your offer letter.

Is a 3-year Indian degree accepted for master's entry?

Sometimes, but not always. The listed master's requirement is 60%+ in a bachelor's degree, and some programmes require a 4-year degree or relevant work experience. Check the exact programme.
