JEE Main & Advanced: The Complete Roadmap

No entrance exam in India carries more weight — or more anxiety — than JEE. Every year, well over a million students register for JEE Main, and the funnel that follows decides who gets into an IIT, an NIT, an IIIT, or a good state engineering college. Understanding exactly how that funnel works is the first real step in preparing for it.

JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), usually across two sessions — January and April — with a student's better score across both counted. It is the qualifying exam for NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutes, and it is also the gateway to JEE Advanced. Only a fixed number of top-ranking JEE Main candidates (roughly the top 2.5 lakh, split across categories) become eligible to sit JEE Advanced, which is conducted by one of the IITs on a rotating basis and is the only exam that admits students into the IIT system.

Both exams are open to students who have cleared (or are appearing in) Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects, subject to a minimum aggregate the conducting body sets each year. JEE Main is a computer-based test with objective and numerical-answer questions across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. JEE Advanced is tougher and more application-based, spread across two compulsory papers, and is designed to test conceptual depth rather than speed alone.

Clearing an exam is only half the process — seats are actually allotted through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority), a single centralised counselling round that fills seats across all IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes). Students rank their preferred branch-and-college combinations, and the system runs multiple rounds of allotment based on rank, category, and seat availability. This is also where most students learn that a good overall rank does not guarantee a specific branch at a specific IIT — that depends entirely on how many seats exist and how competitive that combination is that year.

All three are centrally funded and academically strong, but they differ in flavour. IITs are entered only through JEE Advanced and carry the strongest brand recognition, especially for core engineering and research paths. NITs are entered through JEE Main alone and each has its own regional strength — a top-branch NIT seat can outperform a weaker-branch IIT seat in outcomes. IIITs specialise heavily in computer science and IT-adjacent branches, and several operate on a public-private partnership model with slightly different fee structures than IITs and NITs.

The students who do well rarely start cold in Class 12. Most build a two-year runway across Class 11 and 12, treating board-exam concepts and JEE-level problem-solving as two layers of the same subject rather than separate tracks. Regular timed mock tests matter more than volume of material covered, because JEE rewards speed and accuracy under pressure as much as raw knowledge. Weak-topic tracking — knowing exactly which chapters cost you the most marks — usually moves a rank more than one more round of revising what you already know well.

Can I get into an IIT through JEE Main alone?

No. JEE Main only qualifies you to attempt JEE Advanced; an actual IIT seat requires clearing JEE Advanced and then being allotted a seat through JoSAA counselling.

How many attempts do I get at JEE?

JEE Main can currently be attempted across both sessions in the same year, and a student can typically attempt it over consecutive years within an age/attempt window the NTA specifies each cycle. JEE Advanced allows a limited number of attempts, generally across two consecutive years.

Is coaching necessary for JEE?

Not strictly, but most successful candidates use some structured guidance, whether through in-person coaching, online courses, or a well-organised self-study plan with regular mock tests — the format matters less than the consistency.

What rank do I need for a good NIT?

This varies every year by branch, category, and home-state quota, since a large share of NIT seats are reserved for students from that state. There is no fixed "good rank" — it has to be checked against the previous year's JoSAA closing ranks for your specific target.

What happens if I don't get my preferred branch?

Most institutes allow an internal branch-change request after the first year based on academic performance, though seats are limited and not guaranteed.
