If you are applying to the United States, the biggest mistake is choosing an English test before checking what each university accepts. Many universities accept TOEFL iBT, many accept IELTS Academic, and a growing number also accept the Duolingo English Test. But acceptance is not the same thing as preference, and some programmes still list only one of them.
So the right question is not “IELTS or TOEFL?” It is “Which test does this programme accept, and what score clears the bar?” Start with the programme page, then check the university list, then book the test. If you want the broader cost and visa picture too, see our United States guide.
You also need to know that test scores are only one part of admission. For most master's programmes, the academic baseline is 16 years of education. A 3-year Indian bachelor's degree is accepted by many universities but not all, so do not assume your degree format will be treated the same everywhere.
