If you are comparing hostel and PG living costs across Indian college towns, Delhi NCR is the place where the monthly pressure is most likely to rise after admission. The tuition can be low in some colleges, but the city itself is not cheap once you miss a hostel seat.
The clearest warning in the Delhi NCR guide is this: “Delhi is one of India's more expensive cities to live in outside campus — factor in local transport and rent if you don't get a hostel seat.” That matters because the same state can look affordable on paper and expensive in real life.
In Delhi NCR, the verified hostel figures split sharply by institution type. DU hostel + mess is “₹0.6L – ₹1.2L / yr,” and those seats are “limited and allotted by merit/need.” A private-college hostel is “₹1L – ₹2.5L / yr.” Tuition also varies widely: DU or central university tuition is “₹0.1L – ₹0.4L / yr,” IIT Delhi tuition is “₹2L – ₹2.5L / yr,” and private university tuition in Noida/Gurugram is “₹1.5L – ₹6L / yr.”
So the first lesson is simple: a government seat in Delhi NCR can still be cheaper than a private seat at home, but only if you actually get the hostel. If you do not, the city cost can change the whole calculation.
