Hidden costs of studying in Canada nobody warns you about

Canada’s tuition is only part of the bill. The real shock is the upfront proof of funds, visa fees, medicals, and deposits you need before you even fly.

The bill starts before you leave India

The cost that catches most families is not tuition. It is the money you must show and pay before you get the visa: ₹15L (CAD $22,895) in proof of funds for a single applicant, plus your first year’s tuition and travel. If you use a GIC, remember it is not a fee — it is your own money, released to you monthly once you arrive. But you must have it available at application time, which is the real barrier for most families.

On top of that, the study permit application is ₹10,000 (CAD $150), biometrics are ₹5,000 (CAD $85), and the medical examination is ₹5,000 – ₹8,000. Those are small next to tuition, but they arrive at the same time. If you want the full country-by-country picture, use our Canada guide alongside this article.

    02

Your real first-year budget is higher than the headline tuition

The headline tuition number is only one part of the total. Verified tuition and living figures give a better picture:

    Cost itemVerified figure
    Tuition / year₹12L – ₹26L (CAD $18,000 – $40,000)
    Living / year₹9.6L – ₹13L (CAD $15,000 – $20,000)
    Proof of funds₹15L (CAD $22,895)

That means the first year can feel expensive even before you count the visa steps. For many families, the shock is not the tuition itself. It is having to show the tuition, living money, and travel money together, while also paying the application costs.

    If you are choosing between college and university, colleges are cheaper than universities. Public college diploma or PG certificate tuition is ₹9L – ₹14L / year (CAD $14,000 – $22,000 / year), while a university bachelor’s is ₹16L – ₹29L / year (CAD $25,000 – $45,000 / year), and a university master’s is ₹12L – ₹26L / year (CAD $18,000 – $40,000 / year).

Want this applied to your marks?

A counsellor will take your scores, your budget and your timeline, and tell you which of these paths is actually open to you.

    03

The city you pick changes your monthly burn rate

Where you live can change your budget more than the school name. In Toronto and Vancouver, living cost is ₹1L – ₹1.4L / month (CAD $1,600 – $2,200 / month). In Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal, it is ₹70,000 – ₹1L / month (CAD $1,100 – $1,600 / month). In smaller cities and the Prairies, it is ₹58,000 – ₹83,000 / month (CAD $900 – $1,300 / month).

This is why “cheap tuition” can still become an expensive decision. A lower-fee college in a high-rent city can cost more overall than a slightly pricier school in a smaller city. If your budget is tight, do not judge Canada by tuition alone. Judge it by tuition plus city rent.

    04

Work while studying helps, but it does not erase the bill

You can work while studying, but only up to 24 hours per week off campus during term, and full time during scheduled breaks. Co-op placements need a separate co-op work permit. That means part-time work can help with day-to-day spending, but it will not reliably cover your tuition or your first-year proof of funds.

After study, the main route is the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). It lasts up to 3 years, and the length follows your programme length. A programme of 2 years or more generally gets the full 3-year permit. Since 2024, PGWP eligibility for college programmes is restricted to specified fields of study, while bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from universities are exempt from the field-of-study requirement. Language requirements also apply: CLB 7 for university graduates and CLB 5 for others.

    05

Visa refusal risk is often about the PAL, not just the bank balance

The visa is called the Study Permit. The Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024, so everyone now goes through regular processing. Plan for 8 to 16 weeks from India. Do not trust the old two-to-four-week timelines.

The most common trap is the Provincial Attestation Letter. The Provincial Attestation Letter is issued by the province, arranged through your institution, and most study permit applications are refused without one. Confirm your institution issues PALs before you pay a deposit. You also need a letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), proof of identity and funds, and a medical exam if your stay is over 6 months.

Steps that usually matter most: choose a DLI that issues PALs, get your letter of acceptance, arrange proof of funds, complete the upfront medical, then submit the study permit application with the PAL, LOA, proof of funds, SOP and medical receipt. Give biometrics at a VFS centre. Apply at least 4 months before intake.

    06

The intake you choose changes how much pressure you feel

Canada has three main intakes, but not every programme opens in all of them. Fall is the biggest intake, with applications typically due by February – April. Winter usually needs applications by June – September. Summer has more limited programme choice, with applications due by October – January.

If you are budget-sensitive, a winter or summer start can still work, but only if your programme exists in that intake. Some schools are much more flexible than others. For example, Sheridan College has a January intake. Do not assume every university or college accepts your course in the intake you want.

    07

Who Canada suits, and who should be careful

Canada suits you if you want a work route after study, because the PGWP is open, not employer-tied. It also suits students who want a country where study and work experience can help a future permanent residence application through Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program.

Canada does not suit you if you need a low first-year cash outlay. It also does not suit you if you are set on a college diploma but have not checked PGWP field eligibility in writing. And it is a tougher fit if your degree is a 3-year Indian bachelor’s and you want a university master’s, because most Canadian universities want a 4-year degree. For college PG diplomas, a 3-year Indian degree is usually accepted, but for a university master’s it often is not.

That is the decision point most families miss: Canada can be practical, but only if your academic profile and upfront funds match the route you choose.

    08

    What to do next

Before you apply, build the full first-year budget: tuition, living costs, visa fees, biometrics, medical, and proof of funds. Then check two things in writing: that your institution issues a PAL, and that your chosen programme keeps your PGWP path open. If either is unclear, stop and verify it before paying a deposit.

    09

    Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need to show for Canada?

A single applicant needs ₹15L (CAD $22,895) for living costs, on top of first-year tuition and travel.

Does a GIC speed up my Canada visa?

No. The Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024, and a GIC now counts only as proof of funds.

Can I work while studying in Canada?

Yes. You can work up to 24 hours per week off campus during term and full time during scheduled breaks.

Will I get a work permit after graduation?

You can apply for the PGWP, which lasts up to 3 years and follows your programme length.

    Is a 3-year Indian bachelor’s enough for a Canada master’s?

Often no. Most Canadian universities want a 4-year degree, though a 3-year Indian degree is usually accepted for college PG diplomas.

Why do Canada study permits get refused?

A common reason is missing or weak proof of the Provincial Attestation Letter. Most study permit applications are refused without one.
