• By 15 July for winter: submit university applications. Deadlines are hard. A late application is not read.

• Same time: arrange health insurance. Public insurance is compulsory and usually paid from the blocked account.

The biggest mistake is budgeting only for tuition. In Germany, tuition may be low or zero at public universities, but the first-year cash need is still real.
