France Student Visa: Requirements, Process and Timeline

The most important France student visa requirement for an Indian applicant is not the VFS appointment. It is Campus France. Every Indian applicant must complete the Campus France process first, including an assessed interview. It is a compulsory gate before the visa, not an optional counselling service.

You begin by creating an Études en France account. Do this 6 – 10 months before your planned studies. Fill it carefully because the information feeds your visa file. You can apply to up to seven choices in a single application through the platform.

Campus France then interviews you about your course choice, funding and plans. Only after Campus France clearance should you book the VFS visa appointment. No student visa is issued without clearing the Campus France process.

This separation matters. Campus France assesses your academic plan and funding explanation. The visa stage requires evidence of admission, funds and accommodation. Treating Campus France as an administrative formality leaves the application exposed before you even reach the visa counter.

The long-stay student visa is called the VLS-TS Étudiant. Before applying, you need admission and Campus France clearance. At the VFS appointment, you must bring proof of funds, accommodation and admission.

You must show about ₹59,000 per month of stay, or roughly ₹7.1L for a year. In euro terms, that is about €615 per month or roughly €7,380 for a year. This is the financial proof requirement, not a promise that your real living costs will stay within that amount.

Your academic and language requirements come from the institution and programme. A 3-year Indian bachelor's is accepted for master's entry because France uses the 3-year Licence itself. A score of 60%+ is typical, while Grandes Écoles usually expect more and may request GMAT or GRE results.

These are typical verified levels, not a universal admission guarantee. Check the programme's own requirements before submitting your application. For the current visa document checklist and acceptable forms of evidence, use France-Visas rather than relying on an old checklist.

Work backwards from your intake. France has September and January intakes, but the choice of programmes is not the same throughout the year.

For the September autumn intake, applications run from October – March through Campus France. This is the main intake. The spring intake begins in January – February, with applications by September – October, but programme availability is limited.

Do not plan around visa processing alone. The 3 to 6 weeks comes after the Campus France interview, while the full route begins months earlier. The official starting point for an Indian applicant is Campus France India.

There is no single document that makes a France student visa automatic. The verified process contains two separate checks, and applicants often focus only on the second.

• Your Études en France account: It feeds the visa file. Complete it carefully rather than treating it as a rough first draft.
• Your Campus France interview: Your course choice, funding and plans are assessed. Be ready to explain them directly.
• Your VFS evidence: You must bring proof of funds, accommodation and admission after receiving Campus France clearance.

Audit these areas together before submission. Your chosen course, previous education, funding explanation and post-study plan should form one understandable account. Do not introduce information at the interview that conflicts with the application you submitted.

Also distinguish an official requirement from advice found online. The exact current document format is not included here, so confirm it on France-Visas. If you are unsure whether your financial or accommodation evidence meets the official wording, this is the point where individual counselling may be useful. It cannot guarantee a decision, but it can help you identify a gap before submission.

Finally, the process does not end when you enter France. You must validate the visa online within 3 months of arrival. OFII validation turns it into your residence permit. Missing that step invalidates your stay.

The proof-of-funds figure is not a realistic all-in budget for every student. Verified living costs are ₹8.6L – ₹13L a year. Paris is estimated at ₹1.1L – ₹1.4L a month, while Lyon, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Lille are estimated at ₹72,000 – ₹1L a month.

Tuition changes the real total sharply. Public university tuition is ₹2.7L / year (€2,770 / year) for a bachelor's and ₹3.6L / year (€3,770 / year) for a master's. Grandes Écoles in business or engineering cost ₹14L – ₹29L / year (€15,000 – €30,000 / year). An MBA costs ₹24L – ₹58L (€25,000 – €60,000).

CAF housing aid can cover ₹10,000 – ₹19,000 of monthly rent for international students. Apply as soon as you have a lease. For tuition, living costs and scholarship options beyond the visa file, use our France country guide.

Your student status allows 964 hours of work a year, which is about 20 hours a week, at the French minimum wage. That can contribute to daily costs, but it should not replace the funds required for your visa or your main living budget.

Language is the practical limitation. You do not need French for an English-taught programme, and business, engineering, data science and luxury management are widely taught in English. However, part-time work and internships are substantially harder without B1–B2 French.

France may suit you if you have secured public university admission, can show the required funds independently and are prepared to handle Campus France well before the visa appointment. It is less suitable if your plan depends on finding work immediately, if you cannot document accommodation and funding, or if you are choosing a costly Grandes Écoles programme while budgeting as though you were attending a public university.

The post-study route is the APS, or Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour. It is available to master's graduates and above for 12 months and is non-renewable. It provides full work rights while you look for a role related to your degree.

Once you find a related role, you convert to a work residence permit. The salary threshold is 1.5× the minimum wage. A longer pathway can run from the APS into a Talent Passport or a standard work permit, followed by long-term residence after five years of legal stay.

Do not treat the APS as unlimited job-search time. It lasts 12 months and cannot be renewed. French becomes increasingly important for job hunting and reaches into everything at the long-term residence stage. If staying after graduation is central to your decision, begin language preparation during your studies rather than after completing your degree.

Create your Études en France account 6 – 10 months before your course and treat the Campus France interview as an assessed visa gate. Before booking VFS, check that your admission, funding explanation and accommodation evidence are complete, then confirm the current document checklist on France-Visas.

Can I skip Campus France and apply directly for the visa?

No. Campus France is the compulsory application gateway for Indian students. It includes an interview, and no student visa is issued without clearing it.

How much money must I show for a France student visa?

You must show about ₹59,000 per month of stay, or roughly ₹7.1L for a year. This is the proof-of-funds requirement, not your complete tuition and living budget.

How long does the France student visa take?

Visa processing takes 3 to 6 weeks after the Campus France interview. Start the wider process 6 – 10 months before because Campus France, admission and the interview come first.

Can I work while studying in France?

Yes. You can work 964 hours a year, about 20 hours a week, at the French minimum wage. Part-time work is substantially harder without B1–B2 French.

Do I need French for a France student visa?

Not for an English-taught programme. French-taught programmes typically require DELF / DALF B2, and French is important for part-time work, internships and the 12-month job search.

What must I do after arriving in France?

Validate your visa online within 3 months of arrival. OFII validation turns the visa into your residence permit, and missing it invalidates your stay. Apply for CAF housing aid as soon as you have a lease.
