Entrance Exams in India: JEE, NEET, CUET

India’s entrance exams gate different courses and colleges. Knowing the right exam saves wasted effort and money.

Some private universities have their own entrance tests or accept JEE/NEET scores.

If you want engineering, you usually have two options: JEE Main/Advanced for IITs and centrally-funded NITs, or your state’s CET for government and private colleges.

State CETs often reserve many seats for state residents and cover a wide range of colleges. For example:

MHT-CET admits to hundreds of engineering and pharmacy colleges in Maharashtra.
KCET and COMEDK cover government and private engineering seats in Karnataka.
TNEA in Tamil Nadu admits mostly on Class 12 marks, not a separate exam.
TS EAMCET is Telangana’s main engineering entrance exam.

WBJEE is West Bengal’s engineering and pharmacy entrance exam.

JEE Main/Advanced is required for IITs and some NITs in all states.

NEET UG is the single national exam for MBBS and other medical courses across India. All states use NEET scores for medical college admissions, including AIIMS Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand.

There are no separate state-level medical entrance exams.

CUET (Common University Entrance Test) is now the main exam for undergraduate admission to central universities like Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi NCR.

CUET covers most arts, commerce, and science courses at these universities. It requires a Class 12 pass with subject-specific minimums.

One CUET exam attempt opens doors to many colleges, unlike state CETs which are state-specific.
