Cost of Studying in Italy for Indian Students: Full Guide

The number most families miss is not tuition. It is the combination of the visa, health cover and the residence permit you must apply for after reaching Italy.

At the broad planning level, tuition / year is ₹86,000 – ₹3.8L (€900 – €4,000), while living / year is ₹7.7L – ₹12L (€8,000 – €12,000). Tuition is means-tested against family income, so your actual public university bill depends heavily on the ISEE Parificato income assessment.

Your exact total depends on the tuition band and city you choose. Add the applicable rows rather than relying on a single advertised tuition figure. You may also have travel and document translation or legalisation expenses. Confirm those current costs with the relevant provider or consulate.

Italian public university tuition is means-tested rather than fixed. The ISEE income assessment sets your fee band. A modest declared family income puts you near the bottom of the scale at most public universities.

International students use the ISEE Parificato. Get it done through a CAF office. This document both sets your tuition band and unlocks eligibility for the DSU regional grant. Skipping it means paying the top band by default, even if your family income would otherwise place you lower.

This is therefore not paperwork to leave until the end. Prepare the family income and financial documents needed for the assessment before enrolment. Follow the instructions issued by your chosen university and region because DSU is administered regionally.

Politecnico di Milano / Torino has tuition of ₹3.7L / year max (€3,900 / year max). Private institutions operate on a different cost scale and should not be budgeted using public university bands.

Milan and Rome have living costs of ₹86,000 – ₹1.2L / month (€900 – €1,300 / month). Bologna, Turin, Padua and Pisa have living costs of ₹62,000 – ₹91,000 / month (€650 – €950 / month).

If your budget is limited, compare programmes in more than one city before accepting an offer. A lower public tuition band does not automatically make the full plan affordable if your monthly living costs sit at the upper end.

Use ₹7.7L – ₹12L (€8,000 – €12,000) as the verified annual living range. When comparing accommodation, confirm what is included directly with the landlord, residence or university. Do not annualise a promotional monthly room price without checking the contract period and included charges.

The most important funding route for a student with limited family income is the DSU regional right-to-study grant. It provides a tuition waiver + ₹4.8L – ₹6.7L stipend + accommodation and meals (tuition waiver + €5,000–€7,000 stipend + accommodation and meals). It is based on ISEE need rather than being a merit competition. You must remain eligible and pass your exams.

Check the applicable call before building a budget around an award. Scholarship documentation and university admission are separate processes. For a broader comparison of institutions, courses and funding routes, use our Italy country guide.

Many programmes admit students on documents alone, while some run an entrance test. That means no university can honestly be labelled safe for every applicant. Compare your degree background, grades, language evidence and course prerequisites with the individual programme page.

A 3-year Indian bachelor's is accepted for master's entry. Your Indian qualifications require either a Declaration of Value, known as a DoV, or a CIMEA statement of comparability. Legalisation and translation take weeks, so start this step early.

For English-taught programmes, the listed requirements are IELTS Academic: 6.0 – 6.5 or TOEFL iBT: 80. Italian-taught programmes require Italian B1 – B2 through CILS / CELI.

Courses Indian students commonly choose include MSc Automotive Engineering, MSc Architecture, MSc Fashion and Design, MSc Data Science, MSc International Management and MSc Aerospace Engineering. Course popularity does not tell you whether your academic background meets a particular programme's entry rules.

The main intake is September. For the Autumn intake in September – October, applications generally run from January – May. It is the main and often only intake. A minority of programmes offers a Spring intake in February – March, with applications by October.

After admission, complete Universitaly pre-enrolment by the published deadline. It is compulsory, and the consulate reads it before your visa file. Its deadlines are earlier than many students expect. The Declaration of Value from the Italian consulate in India also takes weeks.

• Apply to universities and obtain admission during January – May for the main cycle.
• Complete compulsory Universitaly pre-enrolment by the published deadline.
• Obtain the Declaration of Value or CIMEA statement. Start early because legalisation and translation take weeks.
• Prepare the ISEE Parificato before enrolment.
• Apply at VFS for the Type D national student visa with admission, pre-enrolment, funds, accommodation and insurance. Apply 6 – 8 weeks before.
• After arrival, apply for the residence permit at the post office and then the questura within 8 days of arrival.

Visa processing takes 3 to 6 weeks. Proof of funds required is roughly ₹5.8L – ₹6.7L for a year, plus accommodation evidence (roughly €6,000 – €7,000 for a year, plus accommodation evidence). This is separate from deciding what your complete personal budget should be.

The residence permit deadline is strict and easy to miss while settling in. Keep the required arrival paperwork accessible rather than packing every original document away.

Check current procedures directly through Study in Italy, Universitaly and CIMEA.

While studying, you may work 20 hours per week, up to 1,040 hours a year. No verified wage estimate applies to every city or job, so do not subtract assumed earnings from the funds you need before departure. Italian is useful for part-time work even when your degree is taught in English.

After graduation, the Permesso di soggiorno per attesa occupazione provides a 12 months post-study residence permit for job-seeking. It has full work rights and converts to a work permit once you are employed.

A work permit can lead into EU long-term residence after five years of legal stay. Italian is effectively required for most graduate employment outside multinationals.

Italy may not suit you if your plan depends on part-time earnings from arrival, if you want private university study on a public university budget, or if you do not want to handle income assessment, qualification recognition, pre-enrolment and post-arrival residence paperwork.

Build your budget by adding your applicable tuition band, annual living costs, visa fee, residence permit and health cover. Start the Declaration of Value or CIMEA process early, complete the ISEE Parificato before enrolment, and verify the Universitaly and visa deadlines on the official pages.

How can public university tuition be under €1,000?

Italian public universities use the ISEE income assessment. A modest declared family income can place you in the low income band of ₹14,000 – ₹96,000 / year (€150 – €1,000 / year). Complete the ISEE Parificato through a CAF office; without it, you pay the top band by default.

Is the DSU grant based on academic merit?

No. It is need-based rather than a merit competition. If your ISEE is under the regional threshold and you pass your exams, you are entitled to it under the applicable rules.

Can I work while studying in Italy?

Yes. Your work rights are 20 hours per week, up to 1,040 hours a year. You still need the required proof of funds for your visa and should not depend on unverified future wages.

Do I need Italian for an English-taught degree?

Not for an English-taught programme. You will need Italian for many part-time jobs and most graduate employment outside multinationals. Italian-taught programmes require Italian B1 – B2 through CILS / CELI.

Is a 3-year Indian bachelor's accepted in Italy?

Yes, it is accepted for master's entry. You must also obtain a Declaration of Value or a CIMEA statement of comparability for your Indian qualifications.

What can I do after graduating in Italy?
