Canada admission requirements: grades, tests and intakes

The biggest mistake Indian applicants make is starting with IELTS and ending with the degree rule. For Canada, the first filter is whether your qualification is strong enough for the level you want.

Academic requirements: “65%+ in Class 12 for most college diplomas; 70%+ for university bachelor's. Master's entry needs a 4-year bachelor's for most universities — a 3-year Indian degree is often accepted for PG diplomas at colleges but frequently not for a university master's.”

That one line decides a lot. If you have a 3-year Indian degree, you are not automatically blocked from Canada. But for a university master's, you should assume it is a problem until the university says otherwise in writing. For a college postgraduate diploma, it is often acceptable.

This is why Canada suits you if you are flexible about route. It suits less well if you want a direct master's at a top university with a 3-year degree and no backup plan. In that case, you may need to look at a PG diploma first, or another country. If you want the full country-wise picture, start with our Canada country guide.

Most offers will ask for an English test, but the exact score depends on the institution and the level. The verified ranges are straightforward:

• IELTS Academic: “6.0 – 6.5 overall (No band below 6.0 is the common rule; 6.0 with no band below 5.5 for many colleges)”
• PTE Academic: “58 – 65”
• TOEFL iBT: “80 – 90”
• Duolingo: “115 – 125 (Acceptance varies by institution)”

Do not treat these as universal. Canadian institutions can set their own minimums. If you are applying to several colleges and universities, check each programme page before you book the test. A score that is fine for one school may be rejected by another.

For many families, IELTS is the simplest choice because it is widely accepted. But if you already have a higher score in TOEFL or PTE, use what the institution accepts. There is no benefit in chasing a test your target school does not prefer.

Canada has three main intakes, and the deadline that matters is the application deadline for that intake — not the visa deadline, and not the date your relatives think is “safe”.

For most students, Fall is the best bet because you will find the widest choice of programmes. Winter works if you miss Fall. Summer is useful only when your programme is actually offered then.

The practical rule is simple: apply early enough that you can still meet visa processing time. Since regular processing now applies, leaving everything to the last minute is risky.

Parents usually ask about tuition first, but the real stress point is the money you must show before you even land.

Tuition / year: “₹12L – ₹26L (CAD $18,000 – $40,000) (Colleges cheaper than universities)”

By programme type, the verified tuition ranges are:

• Public college diploma / PG certificate: “₹9L – ₹14L / year (CAD $14,000 – $22,000 / year)”
• University bachelor's: “₹16L – ₹29L / year (CAD $25,000 – $45,000 / year)”
• University master's: “₹12L – ₹26L / year (CAD $18,000 – $40,000 / year)”
• MBA: “₹26L – ₹77L (CAD $40,000 – $120,000)”

Living / year: “₹9.6L – ₹13L (CAD $15,000 – $20,000)”

Location changes that a lot. “Toronto, Vancouver: ₹1L – ₹1.4L / month (CAD $1,600 – $2,200 / month)” is the expensive end. “Smaller cities and the Prairies: ₹58,000 – ₹83,000 / month (CAD $900 – $1,300 / month)” is much easier on the budget.

The money you must prove is “₹15L (CAD $22,895) (Single applicant, on top of tuition).” That is the real gatekeeper for many Indian families. It is not a fee you lose; it is evidence you can support yourself. But it must be available when you apply.

Also remember one-off costs: “Study permit application: ₹10,000 (CAD $150)”, “Biometrics: ₹5,000 (CAD $85)”, and “Medical examination: ₹5,000 – ₹8,000”.

The Graduate Investment Certificate, or GIC, is one of the easiest things to misunderstand. The verified rule is: “The GIC is not a fee — it is your own money, released to you monthly once you arrive. But you must have it available at application time, which is the real barrier for most families.”

If you use it as proof of funds, the amount is “₹15L (CAD $22,895)” and it is “Returned to you in instalments after arrival.”

For visa evidence, the acceptable proof of funds options are “a GIC, four months of bank statements, a sanctioned education loan, or a sponsor letter with documents.” In other words, you do not have to use a GIC. But you do have to prove the money.

So the question is not “Can my family eventually afford Canada?” It is “Can I show the required funds now?” That is why some otherwise strong students get stuck at the application stage.

For Canada, the visa is the Study Permit. The key change students still miss is the Provincial Attestation Letter. The verified note is: “The Provincial Attestation Letter is issued by the province, arranged through your institution, and most study permit applications are refused without one. Confirm your institution issues PALs before you pay a deposit.”

That means you should not pay a deposit just because an offer letter arrived. First ask whether the institution can issue PALs for international students. If it cannot, the offer may not help your visa application.

The application steps are:

• Choose a DLI that issues PALs.
• Get your Letter of Acceptance and pay the tuition deposit the institution asks for.
• Arrange proof of funds.
• Complete the upfront medical with an IRCC panel physician.
• Submit the study permit application with the PAL, LOA, proof of funds, SOP and medical receipt.
• Give biometrics at a VFS centre.

The visa cost is “₹10,000 + ₹5,000 biometrics (CAD $150 + CAD $85 biometrics)”. Processing is “Highly variable since SDS closed — plan for 8 to 16 weeks from India.” The Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024, so do not rely on old fast-track timelines.

If you want the plain-language checklist for these steps, keep this article open and cross-check your target colleges with the rest of our Canada guide.

Canada becomes attractive because the work route after study is relatively open. While studying, you may work “Up to 24 hours per week off campus during term, full time during scheduled breaks. Co-op placements need a separate co-op work permit.”

After study, the main route is the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The verified rule is “8 months to 3 years, matching the length of your programme.” A “programme of 2 years or more generally gets the full 3-year permit.”

But there is a catch. “Since 2024, PGWP eligibility for college programmes is restricted to specified fields of study — but bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from universities are exempt from the field-of-study requirement. Language requirements now also apply (CLB 7 for university graduates, CLB 5 for college).”

That matters if you are choosing between a college diploma and a university degree. A college can be cheaper, but the PGWP rule is tighter. A university bachelor's, master's or doctoral route avoids the field-of-study problem.

For permanent residence, the main chain is “PGWP → skilled work experience → Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class) or a Provincial Nominee Program.” Canadian study and Canadian work experience both add CRS points. If your long-term goal is PR, Canada is strongest when you actually use your study time to build work experience here.

Also note one useful family detail: “Spouses of master's and doctoral students remain eligible for open work permits.” That can change the budget if you are a couple.

Canada suits you if you want a route where study, work and possible PR can connect. It also suits you if you can handle the paperwork and the upfront proof of funds without panic.

Canada does not suit you if you need a very low-cost destination. It also does not suit you if your plan depends on a 3-year Indian degree being accepted for a university master's without checking the university’s own rule first.

It is also a less comfortable choice if you are applying to a college programme without checking whether it is in an eligible field for the PGWP. That mistake is expensive because it affects your post-study work options, not just your admission.

If you are stuck between a college diploma and a university degree, the safer choice is usually the route that protects your future work rights, not just the cheaper first-year tuition. That is the decision families regret least.

First, check whether your 3-year Indian degree fits the course level you want. Then confirm the PAL, proof of funds and intake deadline before you pay any deposit. If you are choosing between college and university, choose the route that protects your post-study work options as well as your admission chances.

Is a 3-year Indian bachelor's accepted in Canada?

For college PG diplomas, usually yes. For a university master's, often not — most Canadian universities want a 4-year degree.

Does a GIC still speed up my application?

No. The Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024, and a GIC now counts only as proof of funds like any other.

How much money do I actually need to show?

You need “₹15L (CAD $22,895) (Single applicant, on top of tuition)” plus your first-year tuition and travel.

Will my college diploma get a PGWP?

Only if the programme is in an eligible field of study under the 2024 rules. Confirm the field eligibility in writing before you pay a deposit to a college.

How long does the Canada study permit take?

Plan for 8 to 16 weeks from India.

Can my spouse work while I study?

Spouses of master's and doctoral students remain eligible for open work permits.
