The best course is the one that fits the French job route

If you want the strongest mix of cost, English options, and job outcomes, France is usually best for master’s-level courses in data science, management, computer science, and engineering. Those are also the courses Indian students pick most.

That matters because France is not a place where you choose only by brand name. You should choose by whether the course leads cleanly into the next step: internship, job search, and then the 12 months APS temporary residence permit after study.

France suits you if you want a public-university master’s with capped tuition, or a Grande École programme where the course is tightly linked to a profession. It does not suit you if you want the cheapest possible MBA, because MBA tuition is much higher at ₹24L – ₹58L a year. For the full country picture, start with our France guide.

    02

Courses Indian students actually pick most

The courses Indian students most often choose in France are not random. They usually fit one of four job tracks: tech, business, engineering, or creative industries.

    • MSc Data Science and MSc Computer Science for analytics, AI, software, and product roles.
    • MSc Management, MSc International Business, and MBA for consulting, operations, sales, and general management.
    • MSc Aerospace Engineering and other Engineering options through Grandes Écoles networks like École Centrale and École des Mines for technical roles.
    • Luxury Brand Management, Architecture, Visual arts, design, and fashion for the creative and premium-brand sector.

For many Indian students, the smart choice is not the most famous programme. It is the course that has English teaching, a realistic admission profile, and a direct link to internships or entry-level work in France.

Want this applied to your marks?

A counsellor will take your scores, your budget and your timeline, and tell you which of these paths is actually open to you.

    03

If your budget is limited, start with public universities

Public universities are the main reason France is affordable. Tuition at a public university is about ₹2.7L / year for a bachelor’s and ₹3.6L / year for a master’s. That is the first thing to check if you are comparing France with more expensive countries.

The living cost still matters. Budget ₹8.6L – ₹13L a year overall, and remember Paris costs more: ₹1.1L – ₹1.4L / month. In Lyon, Toulouse, Bordeaux, and Lille, it is lower at ₹72,000 – ₹1L / month.

Do not forget the one-off costs either. You will also pay the Campus France procedure, the VLS-TS student visa, and OFII validation on arrival. Health insurance is listed as Free because students join French social security at no cost, but you still need to budget for rent deposits, travel, and setup expenses.

France is one of the lower-total-cost destinations because tuition is capped, healthcare is free, and CAF housing aid can reduce monthly rent. You must still show about ₹59,000 a month in funds for the visa file.

    04

Which course gives you the best return after graduation

If your goal is work after study, the strongest options are the ones employers already understand: data science, computer science, engineering, management, and international business. These courses line up best with the kind of roles students look for after the APS period starts.

The APS route gives you 12 months after graduation. It is available to master’s graduates and above, and it gives you full work rights while you look for a role related to your degree. Once you find one, you convert to a work residence permit.

That makes a difference in how you should choose a programme. If you pick a creative course, make sure you are comfortable building your network and portfolio. If you pick a management course, check whether the school has employer links. If you pick engineering or data science, look for a programme that clearly feeds into internships and French industry jobs.

The salary threshold for conversion to a work residence permit is 1.5× the minimum wage. If that sounds too tight for your plans, France may not be the right first choice after graduation.

    05

Business school, Grande École, or public university?

This is the decision many Indian families get wrong. The course title matters less than the institution type and the cost difference.

    OptionTypical fitTuition you should expect
Public universityBest for master’s students who want value and a broad academic route₹2.7L / year for bachelor’s, ₹3.6L / year for master’s
    Grandes ÉcolesBusiness, engineering, and career-focused study₹14L – ₹29L / year
MBAExperienced candidates aiming for management roles₹24L – ₹58L

Grandes Écoles are not cheap, but they are often chosen for the tighter career focus. HEC Paris and INSEAD sit in this category of high-profile business study. If you are asking where graduates actually go, this is often where the job-oriented crowd ends up.

For many Indian students, a public-university master’s is the most sensible starting point. For others, especially those targeting business or engineering brands, the higher fee can still make sense if the fit is right.

    06

Language and entry rules can decide the course for you

For English-taught programmes, you usually need IELTS Academic 6.0 – 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80 – 90. For French-taught programmes, you need DELF / DALF B2.

A 3-year Indian bachelor’s is accepted for master’s entry. The common academic level is 60%+, but Grandes Écoles want more and often ask for GMAT or GRE. Some business programmes ask for GMAT 600+ or GRE 310+.

This is why some students should not chase a course just because it sounds popular. If your profile is better for a public university, that may be the smarter move. If your test scores are stronger and your budget is larger, a Grande École can be worth the extra cost.

    07

How the application and visa path affects your choice

Every Indian applicant goes through Campus France first, including an interview. It is a compulsory gate before the visa, not an optional service.

The key steps are simple, but you must do them in order: create a Campus France Études en France account, apply to institutions, attend the interview, book the VFS visa appointment, and then validate the visa online within 3 months of arrival. Missing OFII validation invalidates your stay.

The student visa is the VLS-TS Étudiant. The visa fee is ₹5,000 – ₹10,000 plus the Campus France fee. Processing time is 3 to 6 weeks after the Campus France interview. You also need proof of funds at about ₹59,000 per month of stay.

This is one reason France is not ideal for very rushed applicants. If you are late on documents or interviews, the course choice itself becomes secondary because the visa file is built around timing and proof of funds.

    08

What to choose if you want the strongest course-by-course fit

Choose MSc Data Science or MSc Computer Science if you want tech roles and a strong English-taught option. These are among the most practical choices for Indian students who want a clear job path after graduation.

Choose MSc Management or MSc International Business if you want a broad business degree and plan to use internships and networking to move into the French job market.

Choose Engineering at a Grande École if you want a technical brand and can handle the higher tuition. This is a more expensive path, but it is also one of the most job-linked.

Choose Luxury Brand Management, fashion, design, or architecture if you already know you want the creative or premium-brand sector. These are popular in France for a reason, but they reward students who are clear about portfolio, internships, and industry contacts.

Choose MBA only if you are sure about the higher fee. It is the least budget-friendly option in this list, so do not take it unless the career move is worth it for you.

    09

    What to do next

First, decide whether your best fit is public university, Grande École, or MBA. Then check the course language, tuition, and whether the job path after graduation is realistic for your budget and profile. If you are ready, compare programmes through Campus France and then build your visa file in order.

    Frequently asked questions

Which courses do Indian students pick most in France?

The most common choices are MSc Data Science, MSc Management, MSc Luxury Brand Management, MSc Aerospace Engineering, MSc International Business, MSc Computer Science, engineering, architecture, visual arts, design, fashion, and bachelor’s or master’s degrees at public universities.

What is the cheapest realistic course path in France?

    A public-university bachelor’s or master’s is the cheapest realistic path, with tuition at ₹2.7L / year for bachelor’s and ₹3.6L / year for master’s.

Can I work while studying in France?

Yes. You can work up to 964 hours a year, about 20 hours a week, with a valid student visa.

What courses give the best chance of getting work after graduation?

Data science, computer science, engineering, management, and international business are the strongest choices because they map most directly to internships, entry-level jobs, and the 12-month APS route.

Do I need French to study in France?

Not for an English-taught programme. But part-time work, internships, and the 12-month job search are much harder without B1–B2 French.

Can I skip Campus France and apply for the visa directly?

No. Campus France is the compulsory application gateway for Indian students, including the interview, and you cannot get the student visa without clearing it.
