Admission Requirements for Germany: Grades, English Tests & Deadlines

Most German universities require a 4-year Indian bachelor's degree for direct master's admission. A 3-year degree often needs an additional Studienkolleg year or is accepted only at some institutions. This varies widely, so check the specific programme's rules carefully.

For bachelor's entry, usually you need at least one year of Indian university study plus Studienkolleg.

Germany has two intakes:

• Winter semester: starts in October. Application deadline is 15 July. This is the main intake; most programmes only accept winter entrants.
• Summer semester: starts in April. Application deadline is 15 January. Far fewer programmes admit students then.

Late applications are not accepted. Apply on time through uni-assist or directly to the university.

For English-taught programmes, you need:

• IELTS Academic score of 6.5
• TOEFL iBT score between 88 and 90

For German-taught programmes, you need TestDaF level TDN 4 or DSH-2.

Basic German (A1–A2) is not required for admission but helps daily life and part-time work.

The APS certificate verifies your academic documents and is compulsory for Indian applicants. It takes several weeks to process and no visa is issued without it.

Start the APS process before applying to universities. Many students underestimate this step and delay their applications.

After admission, open a blocked account with ₹11 lakh (€11,904) as proof of funds. This deposit is not a fee; you use it for living expenses at about ₹95,000 (€992) per month.

The student visa (National Visa Type D) costs ₹7,000 (€75) and takes 6 to 12 weeks to process. Appointment waits at German missions in India are the longest delay.

Apply for your visa appointment immediately after admission to avoid missing the October start.

You can work 140 full days or 280 half days per year. Working-student (Werkstudent) roles pay around ₹1,000–₹2,000 (€14–20) per hour and count towards this limit.

Basic German helps in finding part-time jobs and internships.

Germany offers an 18-month residence permit to look for work related to your degree after graduation.

You have full permission to work in any job during this period. Once you find a graduate-level role, you can apply for an EU Blue Card or a standard work permit.

Financial proof for this job-seeking period is about ₹1 lakh (€1,091) per month.

Start your APS certificate process early. Check if your 3-year degree is accepted or if you need Studienkolleg. Apply by 15 July for the winter intake, the main entry point. Prepare your English test scores and open a blocked account after admission. Book your visa appointment immediately to avoid delays.
