Is a 3-Year Indian Bachelor's Degree Accepted for Australian Master's?

Most Australian universities accept a 3-year Indian bachelor's degree for entry into master's programs. This is a key advantage compared to countries like Canada, which usually require a 4-year degree.

However, top Group of Eight universities typically want a higher academic score, usually 70–75% or more, while most other universities require at least 65% in your bachelor's degree.

    02

    English Language Test Requirements

To meet admission and visa requirements, you need to prove your English proficiency. The main accepted tests and scores are:

    • IELTS Academic: Overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0 (visa requires minimum 6.0 overall)
    • PTE Academic: Scores between 58 and 64
    • TOEFL iBT: Scores between 79 and 94

Make sure you meet both the university and visa minimum scores before applying.

Want this applied to your marks?

A counsellor will take your scores, your budget and your timeline, and tell you which of these paths is actually open to you.

    03

    Key Intakes and Application Deadlines

Australia has two main university intakes each year:

    • Semester 1 (Main intake): February to March start. Apply by September to November of the previous year.
    • Semester 2: July to August start. Apply by April to May.

There is also a limited November intake, but it is not widely available.

Applying by these deadlines is crucial because late applications are often rejected or delayed.

    04

The Genuine Student Requirement: What You Must Know

Since 2024, the Genuine Student requirement replaced the older Genuine Temporary Entrant test. You must write a personal statement explaining why you chose your course, why Australia, and your plans after graduation.

This statement is assessed seriously and generic or copied answers are the most common reason for visa refusals. Write it yourself and be honest.

    05

    Visa Application Steps and Timing

The student visa (subclass 500) process takes 4 to 12 weeks depending on your institution's risk rating. Key steps include:

    • Receive an offer and pay the deposit to get your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) 4 to 8 months before your course starts.
    • Arrange Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire visa duration.
    • Write your Genuine Student statement.
    • Show proof of funds: ₹17L for living costs plus first-year tuition and return travel.
    • Lodge your visa application online and complete health and character checks.

Do not book flights until your visa is granted. The visa fee of ₹1.4L (from 1 July 2026) is non-refundable even if refused.

    06

Summary of Academic and English Requirements

    RequirementDetails
Bachelor's Degree Percentage65%+ for most master's; 70–75%+ for Group of Eight universities
IELTS Academic6.5 overall, 6.0 minimum in each band
    PTE Academic58 – 64
    TOEFL iBT79 – 94
    07

Where to Check Full Course and University Lists

Before applying, verify that your chosen course and university are registered on the official CRICOS register. This ensures they are legally allowed to enrol international students and issue a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) needed for your visa.

You can access the full CRICOS dataset monthly updated at data.gov.au or search individual institutions at cricos.education.gov.au.

Apply early for the February or July intake by their deadlines. Write your Genuine Student statement carefully. Verify your course on CRICOS before paying deposits.
